Researchers have found computer-designed tiny proteins to provide protection against the SARS-CoV-2 that is the basic reason behind the current widely spreading COVID-19 pandemic. The new finding published in Science showed the antiviral LCB1 to combat the best-known SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies during its protective actions. This antiviral candidate is currently being scrutinized for helping find an effective remedy against the coronavirus. The spike proteins on the membrane of the coronavirus help it attach to the human cells, break in, and further cause more infection. Thus, the research for finding a drug or any other intervention that can treat or prevent the infection is still on.
The research team from the University of Washington School of Medicine has thus found the computers to help develop new proteins that bind firmly to SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein and block it from infecting other cells. The researchers have been able to design around 2 Million Spike-binding protein candidates using the computer. However, there is still more clinical testing required for the computer-generated antivirals even though they are quite effective. These antivirals at least block the SARS-CoV-2 infection and the monoclonal antibodies. They are also easier to produce and stable. The need for stringent refrigeration like other antivirals is also not required.
Thus, the computer-generated antiviral proteins comprised of the ACE2 receptor and a synthetic protein like the potent LCB1 to help bind to the surface of the virus and reportedly kill the virus just as any effective monoclonal antibody. The computational protein designing is a proof that it is possible to produce high-affinity antiviral proteins from the start for the development of promising drug candidates for preventing viral infections. The SARS-CoV-2 therapeutics is likely to benefit from this newly generated computational protein designs.
