Diagnosing of heart attacks is one of the most challenging tasks for the medical professionals. And at present, the lockdown and Coronavirus pandemic condition has taken a toll on many individuals and thereby, increasing the cases of heart attacks across the globe. Thus, Dr. Roi Westreich from Soroka University Medical Centre has developed a saliva test to hasten heart attack diagnosis. In this new technique, the patients spit in a tube and within 10 Minutes the results can be obtained compared to the 1 Hours wait for the standard blood test. At present, heart attacks require early diagnosis for better treatment to restore the blood supply to the blocked arteries. In this new diagnosis, a protein called cardiac troponin is hunted for as it is usually released when the heart muscles are injured.

For the pre-hospital setups, this simple and rapid troponin test is a huge breakthrough for patients having chest pain. Generally, the blood samples are preferred but this is the first time saliva is being tested. Before the detection of cardiac troponin, saliva is treated to remove excess proteins. Moreover, the comparison between the outcomes of blood and saliva samples showed processed saliva samples to be more effective. The test can thus be used to identify people with myocardial injury. Hence, this new study is likely to open a new door for the research on cardiac problems.

The researchers plan on building a prototype version of the new saliva test to understand the accuracy of the test when compared to the traditional blood tests. However, the researchers find the customized saliva test to show better threshold and accuracy. The researchers are waiting to expand their production and study so as to help save more lives.
