An international group of 17 leading experts specializing in chronic conditions have made claims that COVID-19 can trigger the onset of diabetes in normal healthy people while can lead to several complications in people suffering from diabetes. Stephanie A. Amiel, the scientist from King's College London, UK, made the statement that COVID-19 and diabetes have a bidirectional relationship.

New England Journal of Medicine published a letter which provided explanations about how diabetes is linked with the risk of getting COVID-19, about its severity, and also mortality. It showcased that 20 to 30% of the patients who died from COVID-19 were diabetic.

Researchers also said that atypical metabolic problems of pre-existing diabetes and the new-onset of diabetes have been seen in the COVID-19 patients. But still the scientists are clueless as to how SARS-Cov-2 (virus causing COVID-19) has impact on diabetes. The studies that have been made earlier have shown that SARS-Cov-2 binds with protein ACE-2 allowing the entry of the virus in the human cells. This protein is located in the lungs as well as in tissues and organs that deal with glucose metabolism such as small intestine, liver, pancreas, fat tissue, and kidney.

Researchers claim that when the virus infect these tissues can lead to several complex dysfunctions of glucose metabolism. Scientists consider the possibility that coronavirus modifies glucose metabolism which may probably complicate pre-existing diabetes or may cause new mechanisms of diabetes. In a previous research, claims were made that virus infections have chances of precipitating type 1 diabetes.

Researchers suggest that by studying the routinely gathered clinical data will help them in examining insulin resistance, insulin secretory capacity, and autoimmune antibody status for understanding the relation of COVID-19 and diabetes.  Paul Zimmet, Monash University’s Professor of Diabetes, has called upon all the international medical community for sharing all their vital clinical observations in order to deal with this situation.
