Based on the new analysis made by the Framingham Heart Study, it has been found that cases of intracerebral hemorrhages have increased in the age group 75 and older, which was earlier quite stable among all the age groups in the last 30 years. The findings have been published in the journal JAMA Neurology.
It was observed that senior adults were increasingly using anticoagulants over the period of time and the researchers have warned against its increasing use.
Dr. Seshadri, senior investigator of the Framingham Heart Study, made the comment that owing to the rise in the aging population and the increase in the life expectancy there are chances that the healthcare systems will register increase in the brain hemorrhages patients.
Vasileios-Arsenios Lioutas, the report’s lead author and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center’s stroke neurologist had prepared the study to know about the trends in the intracerebral hemorrhages incidences in 10,333 Framingham participants from the years 1948 to 2016.
The periods of years were distributed into 1948-1986, 1987-1999, and 2000-2016. The changes in the diagnostic approaches were taken into consideration. It was around 1980s that use of CT scan helped in diagnosis of bleeds which was difficult previously. In the late 1990s there was increase in the prescription of blood thinners, which proved beneficial to prevent clots that happened from atrial fibrillation. In 2000s there were advancements in the preventative practices.
Dr. Lioutas said, “One of the possible explanations for why we saw more bleeds in older Framingham participants is that, by using these anticoagulant medications, we prevented adverse events that would potentially have killed them earlier in life. We prolonged their life expectancy and then, because we did, they were at risk to have a hemorrhage later in life.”
The Market Research Store has published clinical trial report on the Intracerebral Hemorrhages which will help the users to understand about the market more comprehensively.
