A team from Karolinska Institutet has used urine to check if a patient is suffering from asthma. The latest study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine emphasizes on the new beginning of personalized diagnosis that is anticipated to result in improving the treatments associated to severe asthma. It has been observed that there are millions across the globe who suffer from asthma and this disease is found to be spreading at a faster rate. According to WHO, the global mortality rate of this disease are around 400,000. The chronic inflammation of the airways results in coughing, mucous formation and breathlessness and thereby, makes the disease fatal.

There are various types of asthma that can range from mild to severe. Currently, for diagnosing asthma there are multiple tests carried out including lung function tests, allergic reaction study, and X-rays. However, there is no easy method to determine what type asthma one is suffering from. The new study can help offer a simple and clear contribution to improve diagnosis. Furthermore, the mass spectrometry-based technique helped researchers measure urinary metabolite levels such that of prostaglandins and leukotrienes which are eicosanoid signaling molecules, commonly known as intermediaries of asthmatic airway inflammation.

On detailed study, the mast cell facilitator prostaglandin D2 and the eosinophil product leukotriene C4 metabolite levels were found to be high in asthmatic patients and this is generally referred to as Type 2 inflammation. The measuring of the levels of such metabolites with accuracy can help link it to the type and severity of the asthma. Additionally, the researchers also observed the patients treated with corticosteroid tablets to also show high eicosanoid metabolite levels which highlight the need for alternative treatments. The latest study is predicted to be the forthcoming biomarker-guided precision medicine. The biological medicines may help increase activation of mast cells and eosinophils in patients with Type 2 inflammation but its cost makes it inaccessible for the commoners.
