Agar-Agar Could Now Be Used To Make Sustainable Optical Fibers

A team of researchers from the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) have recently developed an optical fiber using agar. This new device is not only edible but also biocompatible and biodegradable. In addition to this, the researchers have confirmed that it can be used for in vivo body structure imaging, optogenetics, and localized drug delivery. Furthermore, the new sustainable device can also be used to identify microorganisms in specific organs and later be completely absorbed by the body. The team including Professor Eric Fujiwara, Professor Cristiano Cordeiro, and Professor Hiromasa Oku from Gunma University has already published their study on the new optical fiber made using agar in Scientific Reports.

The natural gelatin that is agar-agar is commonly referred to as agar. This product is obtained from marine algae. The major reason behind its increasing use is the polysaccharides, which includes agarose and agaropectin. These polysaccharides form the optical fibers as per the desired requirement. The researchers are planning on designing various types of optical fiber by varying the amount of agar solution and the mold design in order to meet the desired refraction index and geometry of the fiber. Meanwhile, the team has been able to confirm that the gel is context-sensitive, that is, it could undergo structural changes in the presence of varying temperature, pH, and humidity and further help the fiber for optical sensing.

On the other hand, the most promising application of the agar constituted optical fiber is its use as an optical sensor or use in the growth medium used for microbial culturing. It is thus clear that the optical fibers can be created as disposable samples with the necessary nutrients. Additionally, the presence of immobilized cells in the device could be optically sensed so as to analyze and measure the signals using a camera or spectrometer.
