Alcoholism is one of most commonly existing addictive behavior across the globe. There are millions of men, female and even boys or girls having this additive behavior. In majority of the cases, many individuals find it difficult to get rid of this habit whereas some are able to give it up completely. Thus, the best option for the people unable to control their urges is relying on the mantra "One day at a time" for recovering from alcoholism. This mantra is very beneficial for people who find a drink a day to give them the strength to move on. According to Yale researchers, the alcohol use disorder (AUD) showed disruptions of activity between the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and striatum, a brain complex associated with decision making.
The findings suggest that the more often alcohol is consumed the more severe disruption turns out to be and the chances of the alcoholics halting their treatment and resuming to heavy drinking is also increased. It is thus clear that disruption of the brain network could be gradually slowed by abstaining from alcohol consumption. However, the researchers suggest that it is most preferable that the AUD patients resort to extensive treatment so as to avoid the risk of relapse.
Furthermore, alcoholics’ saying that they are ok and are no longer drinking is unbelievable as their brain does not work that way. At present, there are medications available to help heal brain disruptions during the early days of the treatment. Currently, the researchers are also testing if high blood pressure drugs can help diminish disruptions in the prefrontal-striatal network and increase the chances of lifelong self-restraint in the AUD patients.
