The glial cells and neurons are the ones that make up the nervous system. And in the glial cells, the astrocytes are found to be present in abundance. One of the important functions of the astrocytes is to capture glucose from the blood stream to generate energy and carry out essential neuronal activity. All these activities ensure the cognitive functions are performed perfectly. The molecules, including type 1 (CB1), present in the astrocytes help the neurons control astrocyte activity. The astrocyte activity is controlled by the neurons using type 1 (CB1) cannabinoid receptors. These receptors have the ability to alter the communication between the astrocytes and the neurons and they are also the primary target of the delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC ?), which is a psychoactive component of cannabis.

The researchers found the activation of CB1 cannabinoid receptors in the mitochondria of astrocytes to affect the metabolism of glucose and the production of lactate in the brain, which in turn has an impact on neuronal function and leads to descent in social interaction behaviors. The researchers from the UPV/EHU-University of the Basque Country and the University of Bordeaux were found to have majorly investigated the interaction between CB1 receptors and neuron mitochondria. They saw deterioration in the mitochondrial activity in presence of CB1 receptors, which later on lead to memory loss.

The latest study published in the Nature Neuroscience and Nature shows the importance of astrocytes in neuron mitochondria in terms of cognitive skill and memory. But, the entire function of the CB1 receptors located in the astrocyte mitochondria and their significance is still unknown. The research on this latest finding is still ongoing.
