Researchers are using the chameleons’ ability to change colors, communicate, and temperature regulation properties in enhancing the technologies, anti-counterfeiting measures, and displays in electronics. However, every material has its limitationsand thus the researchers are working toward developing a flexible film that will change colors depending on the stretching, pressure, or humidity. The latest study published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfacesthe structural coloration of the chameleons is explained by studying the way the guanine crystals present in the skin surface reflects light by tensing or relaxing the skin. Additionally, the structural colors are different in different animals. The researchers developed chameleon skin like crystalline nanostructures, but its production is not only difficult but also depends onnon-renewable petroleum resources.
The researchers tried cellulose nanocrystals which are renewable materials withself-assembling ability into a film with rainbow-like structural colors. However, the fragility and non-stretchabilityhas encouraged the researchers Yu-Zhong Wang,Fei Song, and team to develop anextremely flexible film with cellulose nanocrystals that alters color when stretched.In order to improve the flexibility of cellulose nanocrystals the PEGDA was added and for crosslinking into rod-shaped nanocrystals UV light was used. Thus, the bright rainbow-like colors ranging from blue to red films were produced based on the quantity of PEGDA. The films produced showed 39% flexibility and stretching with color change from red to green.
It is for the first time that the stretching- and relaxing-based and reversible structural color changes that are not only brilliant but also visible to the naked eye is being experimented using cellulose nanocrystal materials. Furthermore, the pressure, humidity, and temperature changes also bring about color changes. There are possibilities that the new bio-based smart skin is projected to have applications in encryption, strain sensing, and anti-counterfeiting measures.
