In this grave situation where people are following social distancing, delivering of the essentials are becoming hard. Thus, drones are being used to deliver the COVID-19 test kits and other protective gears on a remote Scottish island.

In a trial of two weeks, Skyports, the drone delivery specialist will be transferring the medical supplies between Oban on the Scottish mainland and a hospital on the island of Mull. There is a long distance of about 10 miles that needs to be covered.

According to Skyports, in the current situation transferring medical facilities and specimens from the laboratory present in Oban to the hospital in Mull involves journey via road and sea which is quite tedious.

Skyports thus commented that the use of drones will cut the delivery time by around 6 hours. Use of drones will be quite helpful in terms of both resources and time. This technique will also ensure safety from the infection.

Chief officer for Argyll and Bute Health and Social Care Partnership,  Joanna Macdonald, further commented that, “The use of drones provides real opportunities to improve services and will help enable quicker diagnosis for our patients”.

The drones that will be used by Skyport is supplied by the Wingcopter, the unmanned aircraft maker and the drone management system will be used from aerospace company Thales.

The local government and the NHS Scotland are both involved in this trial along with the U.K.’s Civil Aviation Authority and Department for Transport.

The technology has been used to the maximum in this COVID-19 situation as there are strict rules being implemented due to the fear of the infection. People are finding out options to stay connected with the world in this situation which is only possible with technology.
