Environmentalists and the Michigan Attorney General, along with many others, are keeping an eye on every phase of the Mackinac Straits process of redeveloping Line 5. Enbridge's Line 5 is the pipeline that connects Michigan's Upper and Lower peninsulas to bring crude and liquid natural gas to Quebec.

But there is another location under the body of water that is a part of the Great Lakes that Line 5 heads through. Enbridge is building the pipeline just south of Lake Huron, under the St. Clair River. An Enbridge spokesperson says this is all part of trying to ease some fears over Line 5's health.

Okay, that actually goes back to the deal with the state of Enbridge. And this is one one of those deals that Enbridge is moving above and beyond for protection, actually, and just make what has been a secure pipeline much better there and doing a horizontal directional test that will push the pipeline under the lake bed.

The new 65-year-old pipeline was built under the riverbed in a trench sunk five feet below. The latest 30 inches diameter pipe segment of 2,800 feet will go deeper. There at the St. Clair Lake, it will be about 30 ft or so under the lake bed.

Enbridge will use Directional Horizontal Drilling. Machinery formed an internal door. The completely welded section of the conduit will then be pushed through the bore hole from the U.S. side of the river.

As per Market Research Store, the Global Horizontal Directional Drilling Market was valued at USD 8.3 billion in 2019 and is projected by analysts to reach around USD 20 billion by 2026. The report states this industry is expected to register growth at 14% CAGR in coming years.

Enbridge reports that automated shut-off doors will be mounted on both the U.S. and Canadian riverside sections. Crews are already doing some preliminary work on the Canadian side.
