The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) researchers have recently released a market study that aims to shed an sufficient amount of light on urgent and relevant efforts being made tofightCOVID-19 by efforts backed by facts that are perpetuated by science and technology. The team has provided a scientific and analytical overview ora concept that they refer to as “encounter metrics” which has the ability to develop means using encrypted methods that can be applied to a device such as ahand held phone in order to attain the ultimate goal of slowing down preventing future pandemics by surveying the incoming signals for the latter.
Encounter metrics is the concept of measuring the levels of interactions between different sectors of a population group. The team quotes that a level of interaction can be quoted as simple as the number of people in an elevator talking to each other or a group of people walking down in a hallway. The team further goes on to enumerate the different number of interactions between the population in various types of environments. In order to carefully mitigate the spread of any infectious disease, the team concludes that there needs to be less communication and interaction between any groups of the population during the peak pandemic approach.
In order to record the encounter and carefully limit the structure of the model, the team suggest individuals to carry their own device that carries Bluetooth capabilities in order to label the encounter between two people in terms of distance and location of the latter. Another format for labelling the encounter between two people can be noted by a random number that is not linked to the person’s device in any way, shape, or form. The team notes that this is just a primary method of identifying the hotspots or clusters during a surging pandemic and not the actual cure.
