Health organizations and many leading healthcare services have been alerting the public by different organizing several health campaigns and reciting slogans about the threats associated with the increased amount of salt in the diet. High salt intake has been claimed as the leading cause behind severe health issues, such as high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases. This article will put forward the health effects and alternatives for table salt.

In the recent research analysis conducted at Wexner Medical Centre and the Ohio State University under the guidance of a cardiologist, Wesley Milks, high blood pressure and stroke are tightly associated with higher levels of sodium in the body. The researchers mentioned that earlier studies authenticate potential stability in blood pressure owing to the high concentration of potassium low concentration of sodium in the body. This study validated that salt can be replaced with potassium to mitigate the levels of sodium, thereby maintaining the blood pressure levels. However, it is not confirmed that sodium concentration is associated with heart stroke incidences.

Hence, to determine the effect on cardiovascular disease, the team at the Ohio University carried out analytical research on the population settled in 600 different rural areas of China. 35 percent of the people residing in each selected village of China volunteered in this study. Throughout the trial, the participants were fed a salty diet comprising 25% sodium chloride and 75% potassium chloride.

After constant monitoring for five years, the investigators found that 3000 people out of 20,995 suffered from a stroke and over 5000 volunteers developed cardiovascular disease. However, after replacing salt, the mortality rate due to stroke was reduced to 2.9 percent and the risk of ailment was slashed to 14 percent. Dr. Neal, the senior author of the study, mentioned that these figures astonished the team. The findings of this study were mentioned in a research article titled “New England Journal of Medicine.”
