After the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for more effective oxygen concentrators is likely to be inclined in the upcoming years. A team of engineers at Texas A&M University created the computational framework to buildan ideal concentrator for the purification of air and production of improved quality of oxygen as per the patient’s demand.

Dr.Faruque Hasan, an Associate Professor, stated that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the medical and pharmaceutical sectors were under major stress. The hospitals and isolation centers have been equipped with a limited number of ventilators. Kim McDivitt and Phillip McDivitt, who work in the university’s chemical engineering department, claimed that patients can be prevented from being hospitalized if innovative design, durable, and portable oxygen concentrators would be commercially launched.

The engineers observed that modifying the design of oxygen concentrators and making them more compact have several benefits. For instance, patients dealing with respiratory ailments such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, pneumonia, asthma, and other similar disorders can use the device anywhere.

Dr. Akhil Arora, the leading author of the discovery, stated that the performance of the existing O2 concentrators could be enhanced by opting for three different kinds of zeolites: 5A, LiLSX, and LiX. He ran a simulation through which zeolites of distinct characteristics were identified. Apart from this, the simulation also helped to characterize the structure and functioning of the oxygen concentrator including the size of the absorption chamber and various levels of absorption procedure.

Besides depicting the zeolites and framework, he alteredother inputs simultaneously throughout the simulation to find an ideal operating range for the convenient, commuting, and better performing medical oxygen concentrator. Specifically, he found that the performance of LiLSX was better than LiX and 5A zeolites, which leads to the production of a significant amount of oxygen.

Currently, medical expertise is required to manage the condition of a patient suffering from breathing problems. Hasan said that they hope to launch a cheaper, malleable, and controllable medical concentrator that delivers a customized amount of oxygen at residential locations.
