A team of researchers at The Australian National University have deployed laser processing to fabricate a highly efficient type ofsolar cells, thereby setting a new limit for futuristic development. The newly developed dual-faced solar cells capture solar energy from both the front as well asthe back of the cell.
The Principal Investigator of the research, Dr. Kean Chern Fong, claimed that the so-called bifacial solar cells outperformed the conventional silicon-based single-sided solar cells. He also said that the researchers’ team designed a real bifacial solar cell that could generate symmetrical power on both sides of the device. A bifacial cell absorbs solar radiations directly falling on one surface of the novel cells while simultaneously utilizing ground reflection through the opposite side, which can generate up to 30% more power when equipped in a traditional solar farm.Bifacial solar cells seem to be more effective owing to their enhanced efficiency in a restricted solar farm. In the next five years, bifacial cells would possibly grab over 50% of the global market.
Dr. Marco Ernst, Chief Investigator of the research, mentioned that the cells were created using a special laser doping process, as it boosts electrical conductivity within the circuit. It's aneconomical and well-adapted approach for boosting solar cell efficiency. The research team was able to attain a front conversion efficiency of 24.3 percent and a rear conversion efficiency of 23.4 percent, resulting in a 96.3 percent bifacial factor.
This results in an effective power output of roughly 29%, which is considerably higher than the top-notch single-sided silicon solar cell available so far.Dr. Ernst felt delighted to announce that a newworld record has been set by selectively laser-doped and one of the mostefficient bifacial solar cells. The Australian Government has funded this research through the Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics (ACAP) and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).
