When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the countries the healthcare workers had no idea about how to treat the patients thus many of them turned to the antibiotics.

According to Dr. Jeffrey Strich, physician and researcher at The National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, most of the COVID-19 patients were given antibiotics during their hospitalization. He further added that it is very difficult to judge what is right and wrong in a situation when you are not aware about the disease or the cure. At this time doctors just help their patients who are really sick.

The doctors had idea that antibiotics are not solution for COVID-19 but they tried to prevent other life-threatening bacterial infections that could take patients’ lives. The secondary infections included urinary tract infections and community-acquired pneumonia, among others.

In a recent study it was confirmed that half of the COVID-19 patients died due to secondary bacterial infections. It was the same study that reported about the increased antibiotic use. It was reported by the study authors that about 75 percent of the patients infected from coronavirus that were admitted in the ICUs received antimicrobial medicines.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have suggested that the patient develops an antibiotic resistance when bacteria/ fungi develop the capability to beat the drugs that are designed to kill them. Moreover, the agency also added that infections caused due to antibiotic-resistant germs are hard -- and many times impossible -- to treat.

Some experts are worried about the fact that the increasing global danger of antibiotics resistance will lead to a bigger health threat than the COVID-19.  In a report by the United Nations (2019) it has been estimated that 10 million people worldwide have chances of losing their lives by 2050 owing to the infections resistant to antibiotics.

The Market Research Store has published a report on the global antibiotics market which showcases during the forecast period there will be an increased demand for the market.
