COVID-19 outbreak has significantly affected each and every business leaving a huge amount of losses. The foodservice industry is one such domain that is facing major hindrances due to COVID-19. Amid this brutal condition, in the US, a smoked salmon producer had to spend thousands of dollars on the treatment of Listeria. His plant was detected with Listeria monocytogenes. 

Wallkill located in New York supplies Daniel Boulud Smoked Salmon and many other varieties had been warned in late March by the U.S. FDA that the plant was infected with Listeria monocytogenes and samples of the same were found. 

The letter that was dispatched on March 25 by the FDA confirmed that in the samples that were collected in November 2019, five of the seventy-eight environmental swabs tested positive for listeria. Though, the agency didn’t find listeria on any of their food products.

Thus in December 2019, Catsmo had to call back their lots of cold-smoked salmon since it was probable that these lots of products were contaminated with listeria.

The justification for this recall of the cold smoked salmon which were distributed in the different states via direct delivery and retail stores was given by the supplier in a press release. He suggested that it was an out of abundance cautionary action taken by them.

Catsmo CFO Frederic Pothier said to the SeafoodSource that they had invested hundreds of thousands of dollars to solve this issue. The production plant was closed for a few days in order to clean and remediate the plant. A company was hired to resolve this issue and every product that was sent was recalled and it was reassured that the plant was completely free from listeria.

A huge portion of the business loss was also experienced due to COVID-19 owing to a pause in the supplies to the hotels and restaurants.
