People struggling with skin problems are said to try medical cannabis products as a potential treatment as per the study from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and the University of Maryland.
This study is considered the largest of its category as it involves 504 respondents, and around 8.8 % of people said yes to the use of medical cannabis for dermatologic disorders. However, several people use them without even guidance from a dermatologist.
The products that are available over the counter are extracted from hemp and are made up of cannabidiol CBD. In addition, they have got very little or no amount of THC. Both CBD and THC are naturally occurring substances in the cannabis plant.
Around 18% of people surveyed in the study use over-the-counter medical cannabis products in the form of oil or cream-based products to treat different skin conditions, including psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, rosacea, and acne.
“Given that we know that consumers are already using cannabis-based products without a doctor’s recommendation, it is of the utmost importance that products available over-the-counter have a certain level of quality assurance,” said Dr. Adam Friedman, professor and chair of dermatology at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in D.C.
Frydman said people check on the company's website or view other websites for quality assurance of the products they are willing to use for information regarding its safety and efficacy. Furthermore, he added, if a customer is not able to get quality statement insurance, they give a clear sign of not utilizing that product in their daily lives.
“The world of medical cannabis is still in its infancy, much of which is because of all the tight regulation and the illegal designation of anything from the cannabis plant,” Friedman said.
He also believes that MCPs have a huge scope in the future because of growing advanced science learning regarding the human endocannabinoid system. It can be modified with the help of cannabidiol and also has an exponential influence on cell turnover and inflammation.
Cannabinoids are highly used substances for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, chronic pain, and other skin disorders with an inflammatory component.
Also, the laws are changed in the cannabis space. Many state and national governments are permitting the use of medical marijuana to treat several diseases, but still, it is illegal under federal law. In addition, even some states have permitted recreational marijuana with THC for personal use, but it is illegal under US law.
Anyway, for sensitive skin diseases, dermatologists recommended the topical steroid cream for anti-inflammatory effects. However, these are safe and effective for most people. But some people don't want to use steroids so CBD could be an effective non-steroidal therapy to bridge the gap. Therefore, there is the potential use of CBD beyond many things. Apart from inflammation, CBD also helps delay the signs of aging. However, there is a lot of hype around CBD in skincare.
