Researchers from the University of Cambridge found that people who have drug addiction may find control to their compulsive behaviors. The paper available in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences offers detailed study about their learning from the fMRI brain images of the volunteers.
In the treatment for the drug addicts, the main focus is to find ways to prevent them from having certain drugs such as heroin and cocaine or it can even be alcohol. Earlier there were studies that suggested that there could be a connection between addiction and compulsive personalities. It is seen that in many cases the addicts are addicted to many stuffs, or there are instances that they switch from one drug to another in an attempt to quit the former one.
The researchers examined the brains of the addicts and their connections such as family members in order to find the connection between drug addiction and compulsive disorders. The study was completed with the help of fMRI scans of 162 volunteers. Among them there were some volunteers that were stimulant addicts and others were siblings of the addicts who didn’t have any kind of addictions. In some of the volunteers there was no family history of any kind of addiction but were normal non-addicted stimulant addicts. There were also control volunteers with no drug abuse history.
The brain scans were compared and the researchers found that the volunteers who did not build up an addiction to substances in spite of using them on a regular basis and who had no ancestral risk showed a strong link between the striatum and frontal cortex in two separate brain networks. The researchers said that this finding states that there is a possibility of disparity in the brain connections having a role in compulsion and addictive reactions to various drugs. This study might prove as a step to treat drug addicts especially those at risks.
