A team from the University of Valencia (UV) has developed a new system using colorimetric sensors to predict the presence of γ-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) in a beverage through any change in color. GHB is little salty, odorless, and colorless compound that is known to override the will of a person when consumed. The team has already patented their new finding as it is a new and safe method in detecting the substance in any soft drink and alcoholic beverage. As GHB is an easily available molecule, it is being used by many manufacturers to attract the consumers. However, the effect of this compound is found to last for 3–6 Hours and as it is easily metabolized by the body its detection is difficult.

Interestingly, the euphoric effects of this compound are the reason behind its increasing use as a recreational drug. The addictiveness and disconnection from reality makes the consumer defenseless against dangers such as robbery or rape. And the surging illegal use of this substance is turning into a new social problem. According to the Spanish Society of Emergency Medicine (SEMES), majority of the sexual assaults are a result of such substance usage.
