The University of Leeds researchers have developed a new and rapid method of diagnosing diseases in patients. The team of researchers has developed a technology to investigate every molecule in the body to detect the presence of disease in blood. The biomarkers are the molecules that are usually detected as an indicator of a particular disease and these molecules are found to be present in their billions. Furthermore, the newly created system is found to possess the ability to easily detect a protein linked to cystic fibrosis and provide detectable signals using just a few biomarkers within a few minutes.

Even though the new system is still in its early stage of development, the researchers believe that it will provide potential results in case of coronavirus testing. Interesting, the technology uses minimal sample for revealing all the necessary data related to the disease. The easy method of isolating molecules from the sample for disease detection, that too within just a few minutes, is anticipated to make diagnosis of diseases quicker for the medical professionals. Moreover, the new method uses DNA origami which is a nanoscale technique wherein the DNA is folded into particular shapes. It is the shape of these folded DNA that help capturing biomarkers.

The nanopores are further used to read each biomarker one at a time. Using single molecule sensitivity, the DNA origami and nanopores together help quantify the disease biomarkers. The researchers are planning to adapt this technology to detect a range of other illnesses, such as coronavirus (COVID-19), as well. By a small modification to the DNA origami, the capturing of COVID-19 molecules will become easier and in turn, help find the protein responsible for helping the virus invade the human cells. For now, the researchers have been able to find the inflammation marker called C-reactive protein that is found to play an important role in management of several diseases like cystic fibrosis. The management and diagnosis of disease could be easily done using sensitive detection biomarkers that enable point-of-care detection.
