Researchers from Georgetown University Medical Center have invented an online COVID-19 symptom tracking tool with an assurance of maintaining person's confidentiality despite being able to keenly monitor their symptoms. The tool is not patented and can be used by others who are unable to develop their personal tracking systems. The risks associated with monitoring and identifying the COVID-19 infected patients to the medical professionals or others exposed to the infected people has turned out to be critical as preventing the transmission of the diseases has become difficult. The details about the “COVID19 Symptom Tracker” have been published in the Journal of Medical Information Research (JMIR).
This internet tool built by the Georgetown assigns a unique identifier when people enter their symptoms or other relevant demographic data. The major advantage of this system is that it allows institutions to create reports about items on which people can react, such as symptoms that might need medical attention. Furthermore, individuals using the system are given information and links to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention COVID-19 recommendations and guidelines for how people having symptoms must seek care. The designing of the system took just 5 Days for the researchers as they made use of data integration and synthesis to pinpoint actionable events and retain privacy.
As there is no much of time and the challenges were higher, the researchers used traditional contact tracing as the base before sculpting the entire system. The initial testing of the system has been completed. However, the lack of identifying data collected in the system as the users are relying on other digital contact tracing apps or entering less of information. Despite all this, the researchers are confident that it could be used by health-related organizations when re-opening so as to ensure the staff that they are actively monitored rather than passive monitoring. The platform’s efficiency has led to it being released in a Spanish language version. As the data is being entered through the website, the researchers hope that they develop an app for the mobile phones to increase the tools usability. In addition to this, a voice activated version is also being worked on as the remote areas have no access to the Internet.
