Recently, a team has found new means to stop the occurrence of sequencing errors by using a portable DNA sequencer. This device potentially offers the researchers the opportunity to work in vitro so as to study and trace the microorganisms such as SARS-CoV-2 virus. With the use of unique molecular tags by Oxford Nanopore Technologies' MinION device, there was almost 5–15% drop in the error rate when sequencing long DNA strands. The latest device is expected to revolutionize the genomic field by reducing the limitation of DNA to only laboratories. According to researchers from the University of British Columbia, the reliability of the device is dicey owing to its above average error rate reduction.
The identity, ancestral history, vulnerability, and strength of the organism can all be understood from the genome sequences. Thus, study help gain more information about the microorganisms adaptation to particular environment and also to develop treatment and diagnostic tools. However, there is a need for perfect and tiny DNA sequencers to obtain genetic details that are generally missed during the research conducted in laboratories. Thus, researchers from Aalborg University developed a unique barcoding system that can create long-read DNA sequencing platforms — MinION — that are 1000 times accurate.
The tagging of target molecules using barcodes is followed by amplification helps create multiple copies of tagged molecules using the conventional PCR technique and further sequencing results in the complete genome. The barcodes could later be used to identify relevant DNA fragments from the sequencing data and produce perfect sequences from the fragments that prove 10 times larger compared to the conventional processes. Longer stretches of DNA help easily identify any variation in the genome and also assemble fragments in high resolution. The most interesting part of this technology is its applicability in any gene and this means it can be used earn accurate and long-range genomic information for plant research, cancer research, microbiome science, and human genetics. The researchers along with Metro Vancouver are advancing the new device to conduct real-time detection of microorganisms in water and wastewater for improving public health conditions & treatment technologies.
