This rapid molecular test has been named N1-STOP-LAMP by the researchers. It shows 100% accuracy in samples containing high loads of SARS-CoV-2.
Enticingly, the test is not only accurate but also easy to use, thus making it a prime solution for use in the medical settings with fewer testing options. This test involves the use of a small portable machine that reliably diagnoses SARS-CoV-2 present in the nasal swabs. The single step test makes it even more efficient and cost-effective compared to many of the existing tests for SARS-CoV-2. The N1-STOP-LAMP method was found to have successfully detected 87% of the tests as positive.
The new test showed accuracy in a very short time thereby making the diagnosis all the more easier for the medical professionals. The feasibility and benefit of the test makes it a preferred choice in the aged care facilities and overseas laboratories having limited resources or equipment. The portable test requires a shoebox-sized machine and a few reagents to make diagnosis accurate. It may be labeled as a 'near care' test but still cannot substitute the existing gold standard PCR testing. This robust diagnostic test is likely to trade some detection sensitivity for ease-of-use and speed. The rapid detection of COVID-19 is believed to pave new path for COVID-19 research.
