A team from the University of California has found a non-hallucinogenic version of a psychedelic drug named ibogaine to possess the ability to treat addiction, depression, and other mental illnesses. The researchers have published the effect of ibogaine on the psychiatric disordersin Nature. Earlier studies have already proved the strength of psychedelics as they are found to directly have an impact on the brain. According to lead researcher David Olson, there are still more facts to be discovered about the psychedelics. The drug under focus is generally extracted from a plant named Tabernanthe iboga. However, there are reports that this drug is unreliable when it comes to reducing drug cravings or relapses. There is no doubt that the side-effects including hallucinations and cardiac toxicity gives it a Schedule 1 controlled substance tag as per the U.S. law.
Using the Schedule 1 substances the researchers are trying to develop a synthetic analog of ibogaine while retaining its therapeutic properties and also lowering thetoxic effects of the psychedelic compound. The researchers have been able to create a new synthetic analog the ibogaine molecule named tabernanthalog or TBG. On the contrary, the new molecule is found to be water-soluble and easy to manufacture using a single-step procedure. Furthermore, the toxicity of the analog was also found to be less toxic compared to ibogaine, which generally caused heart attacks and deaths.
The researchers also confirmed the formation of new dendrites and spines on the dendrites in the nerve cells when using TBG. The new synthetic analog is found to be similar to effects of drugs such as ketamine, LSD, MDMA and DMT. Furthermore, the TBG caused no hallucinations. The positivity of the new analog has convinced Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees to approve it for further investigation in complex psychiatric disorders. The researchers have confirmed the use of this analog in reducing the consumption of abusive substances such as drugs, alcohol, and other addictive substances.TBG was found to change the structure of the neurons in the brain circuit that basically deal with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and addiction. The current focus is avoiding relapses and also using it for multiple disease treatment.
