An investigational vaccine against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has been developed by a team from The University of Texas (UTAUS), Austin, as it is one of the infectious diseases that have increased the mortality rate among the infants. According to the researchers, the vaccine helped generate RSV-counteracting antibodies in large counts for several months. RSV can be contracted throughout the life but it is fatal in very old and young people. The virus is known to cause bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and lower respiratory tract disorders. In regions lacking medical care, there are 100,000 dying of RSV every year.

In the newborns, RSV is second infectious disease causing death after malaria. The researchers Peter Kwong and Barney Graham from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’(NIAID)Vaccine Research Center (VRC) along withJason McLellan from UTAUS developed the vaccine candidate DS-Cav1.It has been 50 Years since when the researchers are working towardcreating an RSV vaccine by making use of traditional techniques. However, till date none have been functioned. Thus, all the researchers together came up with a new plan of usingstructure-based vaccine design to develop a highly effective and durable vaccine.

On a related note, recently, scientists developed new vaccine that persuades antibodies that contribute to safety. Investigators at theIcahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai(ISMMS) have designed a new vaccine comprising DNA and recombinant proteins, which are the proteins containing a portion of an HIV protein and alternative unrelated protein. This new vaccine was examined in monkeys and was demonstrated to form antibodies akin to those linked with protection from HIV, which is the virus that induces AIDS.
