A team from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has recently decided to find a solution for the needle-struck injuries. Researchers from Rhythmlink International LLC and MUSC together developed a safety electrode that can outdo the use of needle sticks.
The new technology has been named “the Guardian Needle.” It has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its intraoperative monitoring. Rhythmlink has license for the electrode. The organization has started boosting its production in order to start rolling out the technology to hospitals across the globe. The thought of putting the medical professionals at risk by using the equipment that is meant to ensure the safety of the patient is the fundamental source of why the researchers came up with the design. During the time of serious surgeries the doctors insert 40 needles throughout the body and have long wires that connect the needles to the intraoperative monitoring machine. The chances of dislocation of the needles or uncapping of the needles while being dislodged from the patient could put the medical staff at risk. Thus, in order to avoid the needle sticking have made the researchers realize their responsibility to find a solution for it.
The Guardian Needle is definitely a big breakthrough as it will never uncap and the electrode will deploy safely while being inserted. Even if the needle is dislodged it will mechanically resheath into the casing. The automatic functioning of the needle plus the adhesive bandages around the needle makes it a secure and self-tapping technology with low time or cost wastage. Additionally, the risk of infection is low due to the bandage.
