The most of the scariest effects of coronavirus is the development of difficulty in breathing. Thus, the need for ventilator for pushing air into lungs becomes necessary. The increasing cases of coronavirus severity have resulted in a massive shortage of ventilators. This situation has caused many hospitals to assign one machine to multiple patients, thereby limiting effective treatment. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) is currently working on the low-cost ventilator prototypes for field settings and hospitals. The ventilators are being made on large scale in order to meet the emergency situations among the patients and lack of life-sustaining equipment.
The University of California San Diego researchers along with the help of ONR worked toward the development of prototype of hand-held ventilators. This tiny technology comprises of just a mask and squeeze bag so as to help medical professionals, especially paramedics pump air into the patients’ lungs. However, in addition to this, the researchers planned on adding sensors, electronics, and motors for making the technology automatic. It could be damaging as the air flow would be consistent despite the pressure being high or low. The UCSD had its novel technology presented at the nationwide Department of Defense (DoD)-held Hack-A-Vent Innovation Challenge.
The UCSD prototypes are currently being produced on a large scale so as to make ventilators available to the naval and civil hospitals. This new technology is an inspiring innovative solution for the medical staff across the globe. The hand-held ventilators could help make a difference in the society.
