The Chinese tech giant and smartphone developer, OPPO,has filed for a patent for an upcoming technology that would be potentially featured in theupcoming generation of wearables. According to this patent, the wearable deviceswould be designed in such a way that theywillanalyze the user's veins rather than scanning their fingerprints or faces for authentication. The company is expecting to introduce this type of biometric recognition feature in its upcoming Band or Watch models.
Through the Chinese intellectual property body CNIPA, OPPO has acquired an intriguing new patent (CN110298944B). This patentinvolves a vein unlocking mechanism that could emerge as an important feature in some of the company's smart electronics. It is, however, destined for wearable technology, unlike the handful of instances now available in the market.
This exclusiveform of biometric authentication technology was earlier unveiled inseveral LG flagship devices. The formerLG smartphone models were featured with Hand ID technology that scans the veins present in the palm to unlock the devices. Selfie cameras were dedicated to reading the veins.
As depicted in the CNIPA website, OPPO has not revealed that its novel technology yet to be launched in its wearables would work similarly.Several tech developers are anticipating that the feature will be activated simply by fastening a wristwatch or fitness tracker to the wrist, provided that these devices would be packed with a range of hi-end sensors that collect information from a user's blood vessels.
As thepatent was approved last month only, OPPO has started working on its new and advanced security feature that will be launched into itsupcoming-generation wearables. The novel unlocking feature may not appear in the company’s next generation of premium smartwatches and cost-efficient smart bands that are under the production phase.
