According to a new U.S. government report, the death rates are higher for chronic illness patients owing to COVID-19. It was stated that the death rate is 12 times higher.

In the report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the dangers created by the diabetes, heart disease, and lung ailments were highlighted. In the report, these were the first three health problems that were recorded by the COVID-19 patients.

On the basis of 1.3 million coronavirus cases, which were confirmed by the laboratory tests, reported to the agency from 22 January till end of May the report was made. 

Health-related information was available for only 22 percent patients. In that 32 percent of the patients suffered from heart diseases, 30 percent were diabetic, and 18 percent has chronic ailments including emphysema and asthma.

It was recorded that among the patients suffering from chronic diseases, around 20 percent died as compared to 2 percent who were otherwise healthy. People infected with the virus who had chronic diseases were six times more prone to be hospitalized    46 percent against approximately 8 percent.

Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and public health specialist at George Washington University, made the statement that people who possess chronic disease suffer severe effects of the coronavirus. But she also conveyed that healthy people are no exceptions as they too have suffered brutally and have even lost the battle.
  
The race and ethnicity data that was available for 50 percent of the patients showcased that around 1 percent American Indian, 4 percent Asian, 22 percent black, 33 percent Hispanic, and 36 percent were white. 

The report also suggested that approximately equal numbers of men and women were suffering from COVID-19, but severe cases were recorded for men.
