Researchers have found the plasticizers that are present in majority of the objects can have a negative impact on the human brain functions. According to researchers from the University of Bayreuth, the plasticizers role in impairing the vital brain functions in the Communications Biology. The plasticizer bisphenol A and S are known to interrupt the signals transmission between the nerve cells on studying the fish brain. The researchers thus believe that such transmissions can occur even in the human brain. Thus, the team has started working on developing synthetic plasticizers that will have zero impact on the central nervous system. The bisphenol present in majority of the plastic-based materials are being studied for understanding the ill effects of the use of plasticizers.

The increasing number of health issues associated with bisphenol A (BPA) has encouraged the team headed by Dr. Peter Machnik to study the plasticisers’s negative impact on signal transmission between nerve cells in the brain. The bisphenol S is considered to be less harmful to health. However, there is no doubt both bisphenols tend to impair the communication between the nerve cells of the brain. The different neuronal functions in the brains tend to be affected. There are few brain cells that excite the downstream cells while few that inhibit those cells. The inadequate coordination between the excitation and inhibition signals in the nervous system of vertebrates leads to numerous disorders.

It is thus worrying how plasticizers impair the coordination in the brain and thereby, damage the brain slowly. The constant exposure to plasticizers for days or months is likely to cause irreparable damage. The influence of the plasticizers on the brain by disrupting the circuits by altering the chemical or electrical transmission signals is known to cause huge damage such as affecting the perception and processing of acoustic and visual stimuli.
