The research team at the University of Bern has recently uncovered research that underlines an enigma effect that gives the aesthetics of the coat color patterns in dogs. The research team made their findings public after discovering a genetic variant responsible for a very light coat in dogs and wolves that were originated more than two million years old in a variant of distant relative of a mammal that resembles the current iteration of the modern day wolf. The inheritance of a larger variety of such coat color patterns in dogs has been extremely debatable over the last several decades.

The current findings made by the research team now cement a pathwaythat can finally solve the current iteration of coat patterns in dogs. Not only did the teamclarified how the coat color patterns are genetically controlled, but they also concluded their research indicating that a light color coat in white artic wolves and many modern dogs is present slightly due to genetic variantthat went extinct a long time ago. The team hypothesizes thatwolves and dogs are two different types of pigments – the black one namely referred to as eumelanin and the yellow one, often referred to as a pheomelanin.

Prior to the study, the study pertained of only four different types of coat patterns; however, they were identified through commercial genetic testing of these variants in many thousands of dogs. These testing result yielded that the current existing knowledge based on the inheritance of coat color patterns was incomplete and not correct in its entirety.For the first time, the research characterized two promoters in details among hundreds of dogs. One of this variant pertained a higher amount of activity and led to an increased and regulated amount of production of agouti signaling protein.
