Human nose is found to have the potential of differentiating trillion types of odor using the 400 types of scent receptors present inside the nose. Thus, a team from Rosa Biotech, which is a part of the University of Bristol, has developed a biosensor which is similar to that of the human nose in terms of functionality. The new tool is found to recognize the concentration or presence of analytes including biological structures, biomolecules, or microorganisms. Biosensors typically consist of three parts: a component that recognizes the analyte and produces a signal, a signal transducer, and a reader.

In comparison to the traditional biosensors, the new biosensing technology that mimics mammals’ olfactory system behaves as an electronic nose. In this system, sensors bind to many analytes to help recognize numerous combinations of molecules and odors. The researchers built the new tool based on α-helix barrels engineered from peptides. These self-arranging hyperstable molecules have the ability to form infinite variants having different affinities. The amino acid sequence’s arrangement helps form the barrels and alter the obstacles, charge it, and also increase its affinity toward different molecules.

They further integrated the sensors with fluorescent and hydrophobic dyes. The different analytes present across the barrels help it replace the dye located in the center. As the dyes fluoresce inside the barrel and not on outside different barrels or analyte help form a fluorescence profile. The integration of this profile into machine learning algorithms is projected to increase its application for commercial and clinical predictions. These peptide barrels can be used for diverse applications by making them sensitive as per the particular applications. It can help improve the yield of biological drug development, virus diagnosis, and treatment optimizing.
