Type 2 diabetes is found to have claimed many lives over the years. Thus, the researchers are striving to find a solution to outdo the outcomes of this disease but the challenges are endless. However, the researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have recently developed a simple blood test that does not need overnight fasting. The accurate screening tool in identifying the risk of type 2 diabetes or heart diseases in the youths is a breakthrough the researchers have long been waiting for. The blood test named hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is simple to help screen youth for diabetes or any related health diseases. This HbA1c test is not only simple but also accurate when it comes to providing exact readings.
Study published in Pediatrics test was shown to help identify the high blood sugar’s (hyperglycemia) association to risk factors for diabetes and heart disease such as obesity and high blood cholesterol. The blood test called HbA1c helped detect hyperglycemia which is found to have a strong relation with cardiometabolic risk factors but the customary fasting glucose test does not provide these details. Most importantly, this test shows the sugar molecules irreversible connection with molecules in the red blood cells in last few months that clearly makes it the marker of hyperglycemia.
Surprising feature of the new test is no requirement of overnight fasting before the test thus making it error free. The high-risk youth identification helps introduce changes in the lifestyle interventions so as to prevent further consequences such as heart diseases or diabetes. As per the American Diabetes Association (ADA) almost 34 Million Americans are undiagnosed. Furthermore, the youth and children develop diabetes such as type 1 diabetes that has a relation with type 2 diabetes that generally occurs in adults. This disease is prevalent due to rise in sedentary lifestyles, poor diet, and obesity.
This is why researchers have emphasized early detection of diabetes and lifestyle intervention in the adults in order to minimize or even reverse hyperglycemia and thereby, avoid complications of diabetes and associated medical problems, such as stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, and hypertension. The HbA1c test is believed to gain more importance as screening tool in clinical practice in the coming days.
