At the time of coronavirus pandemic, all of us are mandatorily wearing face masks while stepping out of their house. The latest masks are believed to help completely lower the spread of virusand the diseases. However, the researchers are worried over the presence of live bacteria on the surface of the masks as it still remains contagious. Thus, the team includingGang Sun, Peixin Tang, Nitin Nitin and colleagues made a cotton mask with reactive oxygen species (ROS) releasing capability on exposure to sunlight and this mask showed almost 100% killing of microbes. Moreover, the new mask could be easily washed and reused as disinfection of it is possible by exposing to sunlight for a long time.

By attaching positively charged groups of 2-diethylaminoethyl chloride (DEAE-Cl) to ordinary cotton is how the researchers made their antimicrobial fabrics.Further, the cloth was dyed in negatively charged photosensitizer solution that later through electrostatic interactions attached to the DEAE chains.The rose Bengal dye used in the fabric and the photosensitizer killed microbes within a limited time period. There are hopes that making a reusable, antibacterial, or antiviral face masks and protective clothing is all possible.
