Researchers are now trying to play with the genetics of human cells in order to check its camouflage ability. The scientists tailored the human cells such that it can create a squid protein named reflectin. This protein has the ability to scatter light such that a sense of iridescence or transparency is created. It may sound as a bizarre trick. But, in reality the researchers are actually figuring out ways to gene-hack specific traits in the human cells in order to understand the functionalities of genetics. Furthermore, the gene-hacked humans with invisibility supremacies are not the major purpose behind research. But, the researchers from the University of California, Irvine biomolecular engineers basically want to create new light-scattering materials using their gene-hacking technique. This study is published in the journal Nature Communications.

The researchers suggest that the other scientists can make use of their methodology to use human cells as a sort of bioengineering sandbox. The team was successful in getting the human cells to completely incorporate the structures to produce the reflectin proteins. It can be found out that the gene-hack took a stand back. The phase mircoscopic study showed that the gene-hacked cells had protein structures with different optical characteristics on comparison with the cytoplasm present in the cells. In other words, the cells optically acted almost as they do in their inherent cephalopod leucophores.

The researchers gave human cells squid-like active camouflage which can be further used for various applications. This study is anticipated to make studies at cellular level all the more possible through research like these.
