A study was carried out by the scientists from the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), in which they tested the urine samples of patients consuming cannabis for medicinal purposes. Through this basic research, the scientists noticed that the amount of CBD or THC present in the cannabis is different from that of what is mentioned by the manufacturers or distributors of cannabis. The study was published in the scientific research journal JAMA Network Open. To be precise, the medical cannabis products labeled as only CBD affluent are composed of an ample amount of THC as well. The latter component is responsible for making consumers “stoned”.
After the legalization of cannabis usage in several states, the demand for cannabis has skyrocketed. Owing to the splendid surge in the demand, the regulatory bodies have not been able to efficiently review the quality of cannabis products available in pharmaceutical stores. The labeled information regarding the composition on the package of cannabis is not authentic. Therefore, medical cannabis products indicating counterfeit information are not recommended for patients. The FDA has not set any regulations for the use and presence of cannabidiol (CBD) in cannabis-infused products, but certain producers and merchants are supplying THC-enriched medical cannabis products without even informing the direct users.
The research involved testing urine samples of around 100 patients, who have been consuming cannabis for one of the several medical conditions such as anxiety, pain, insomnia, or depression. A clinical trial was conducted to check the volume of cannabis ingredients being consumed or inhaled. The testing reports of urine samples uncovered surprising results. The concentration of CBD found in the urine samples was below one-third of what was expected. Also, a high concentration of THC was reported in the urine samples of those patients. As per the regulations, medical marijuana products ought to be THC-free or may contain a limited amount of this psychoactive ingredient.
