Rheumatic conditions in many of the cases develop slowly and the initial symptom is inflammatory arthritis, which is something amiss. Owing to the close similarities at the initial stage of various conditions, the clinicians find trouble in identifying the right disease.

Dr. Rachel Knevel and the colleagues at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and Leiden University in the Netherlands developed the algorithm G-PROB (genetic probability tool), is a gene-based algorithm, which allows discriminating the lupus, psoriatic arthritis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, and spondyloarthropathy.

Knevel and her team in Science Translational Medicine have given a brief description about the diagnostic tool about how it combines the person’s genetic data with genetic risk scores. With the help of this approach they were able to diagnose the five most probable rheumatic diseases.

Approximately 1,700 patients were tested for the G-PROB as their clinical data was available by Partners biobanks and eMERGE. These were the patients that were diagnosed with at least one kind of rheumatic disease. Knevel and her team suggested that the new approach helped them to rely on the genotype information in order to make accurate and early determination of the rheumatic diseases.

The authors wrote in the journal that the pre-existing genetic data can be taken as a part of patient's medical history as it has the potential to improvise the precision medicine.
The team while testing the new method on the large number of patients' genetic samples could rule out at least a disorder in all patients. Thus, identifying approximately diagnosis in 45% of the patients and identify incorrect diagnoses in 35% cases.

By adding the genetic risk score calculations to the clinical information enhanced the G-PROB's diagnostic precision to 51% when compared to 39% that results from the clinical data interpretation.
