A team created positively charged fluorescent dyes which are classified into a novelclasstermed“small-molecule ionic isolation lattices or SMILES.” It is a brightly glowing compound that can be easily switched to a crystalline and solid state. It is a breakthrough the researchers have long been trying to develop fluorescent solids. This is supposed to be the brightest known components in actuality. It is anticipated to have the potential to be used in any technology which requires bright fluorescence or optical properties like solar energy harvesting, lasers, and bioimaging. According to Chemist Amar Flood from Indiana University and Bo Laursen from the University of Copenhagen, the fluorescent solids could have interesting applications in upconverting light to absorb more solar spectrum in solar cells, light-alternating components used in photochromic glass or information storage, and circularly polarized luminescence used in 3D display technology.
Even though there are 100,000 fluorescent dyes available none of them can be mixed or matched to create solid optical materials. Usually the dyes experience "quenching" while changing into solids owing to which they behave in a cluster form and thereby, decreases their fluorescence to produce light glow. However, there is a chance of emerging of inter-dye couplingand quenching in the solids and they helplessly touch each other. The team tried overcoming the problem by mixing cyanostar and macrocycleand this prevented the fluorescent molecules from interacting while the mixture solidified and still had their optical properties intact. Later SMILES formed from the solid and the researchers grew crystals, made dry powders before forming a thin film. The lattice-like checkerboard formation of the cyanostar macrocycles made addition of a dye easier without any adjustment.
The use of colorless and colorful macromolecules helped the isolation lattice to completely express the bright fluorescence of the dyes. The researchers plan to make use of the novel technique to explore the properties of fluorescent materials and help dye makers realize the potential of the materials in different applications.
