Olympics 2020 which was supposed to be held in Tokyo has been postponed to 2021. Skateboarding had also made its way in the Olympics. There were street skateboarding and park skateboarding competition.

Tony Hawk in an interview commented that the sport does not require this prestige and it can lead to damage the counter-cultural standing of the sport.

Tony Hawk, the skateboarding hero, was present in the Vans Park Series France event in Paris were in an interview shared some of his opinions about the inclusion of skateboarding in the Tokyo Olympics.

He stated that the inclusion of the sport in the Olympics platform will somehow encourage people to skate just for fame and fortune. He commented that skateboarding offers more to the young generation in terms of identity and confidence. It helps young people in setting their goals and it should not be competitive

Hawk went on to comment that skateboarding did not need the popularity of Olympics but it is more the other way round. He further said, “Through my more prominent professional years, I wouldn't have cared if it was in the Olympics because we already had our own scene, and skateboarding was far more fun and popular than most Olympic sports”.

He had the opinion that skateboarding does not require any kind of validation it is the Olympics that need the sport’s coolness.

Skateboarding has got a provisional entry acceptance by the International Olympic Committee for the Paris 2024 Games. Other games that also have some hope are break dancing, climbing, and surfing. Though this is not the final decision future editions can be expected after the Tokyo Olympics.
