Stanford Researchers Develop A Hand-Powered Centrifuge For COVID-19 Detection

A team led by Manu Prakash at Stanford University has developed a hand-powered centrifuge that can be combined with a low-cost assay for Sars-CoV-2 detection that is present in saliva. This new discovery will help make diagnosis possible in the areas were resources are limited or are present in remote. All the traditional tests for Covid-19 require high throughput and are available only in the metropolitan hospitals. The new centrifuge could be made using readily available products. This $5 unit is currently being validated in the U.S. and Bolivia. Moreover, the virus is found to be spreading in the indigenous communities with poor healthcare infrastructure. The centrifuge that is hand powered relies on Constance Cepko from Harvard University and her student Brian Rabe at Howard Hughes Medical Institute developed assay. The assay works on loop-mediated isothermal amplification (Lamp) and it is designed to amplify microgram quantities of viral RNA at a single reaction temperature. The motivation to find feasible and rapid test on a large scale helped researchers use the centrifuge and modify the protocol. In this centrifuge, the viral RNA of COVID-19 is obtained through the usual centrifugation process coupled with the use of hot bath, salt binder, silica beads, ethanol wash, Lamp primers, and other reagents treatment. The Lamp protocol is anticipated to encourage the production of Handyfuge. This technology can also be used for future inexpensive diagnostics such as food adulteration and malaria.
