Earlier this year, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a safety warning about avoiding the use of paclitaxel-coated balloons and stents in lower limbs for arterial revascularization. The outcomes from metadata of 28 randomized meticulous trials involving 4663 volunteers suggested that there could be a two-fold more risk of demise among patients who had equippedpaclitaxel-coated devices. The study findings are available in the European Heart Journal.
In the current study, the researchers have examined medical records of 64,771 globally residing patients suffering from lower extremity artery disease(LEAD), who underwent treatment for 107,112 times to treat blocked arteries. The researchers analyzed medical data of patients from 2007 when paclitaxel-coated balloons and stents entered the medical sector as a treatment device.Paclitaxel is, in fact, a cell growth-suppressing agent thatis being used as a coating for medical products like balloons and stents. The FDA issued a warningagainst the usage of paclitaxel-coated devices, as the agent restricts the proliferation of scar tissues and poses a risk of relapse of blockages in the already treated arteries.
The study involves data retrieval and medical records examination of 9.2 million people, who enrolled for BARMER, a German health insurance scheme. The German scientists identified all the patients who underwent first endovascular revascularization treatment to clear the blockage inthe lower extremity artery within the tenure of nine years from 2007 to 2015.The researchers extended the study to 2017 by examining the patients for additional two years. By 2017, nearly 42% of patients suffering from artery blockage, who were recruited for the study, had died.
On a related note, Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, Ethicon has recently unveiled the first powered circular stapler, ECHELON CIRCULAR, designed specifically for thoracic, colorectal, and gastric procedures. The company is claiming that the device features “Gripping Surface Technology,” through which tissues would be handled dedicatedly, by significantly reducing the potential damage being caused by the existing techniques and devices.
