West Virginia University scientists are now working toward making railways safer by producing a Band-Aid-like shielding jacket for tank cars that tacklerisky materials. The latest composite material with superior puncture and fire resistance qualities helps prevent spills and leaks caused by accidents. This new protective coating will help protect surrounding communities, the environment, and emergency responders. The researchers developed the new protective jacket using glass and polymer that contained high-density polyurethane foam in between to help lower fatigue, puncture, and also to cause fire resistance. The sandwiching of layers between Kevlar reinforced resins is likely to enhance the protective jackets functionality.
The glass fabric-foam materials look like a Band-Aid and it is integrated with resin (epoxy) to anchor with the steel substrate.In the U.S., there are billions of gallons of harmful materials that are transported on the annual basis. Mostly, for transportation the trucks are used but the rail cars are also being used owing to its 35,000 gallonsholding capacity. However, the major drawback is the derailing and getting punctured on colliding with the steel tracks which in further leads to environmental safety issues.According to the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, around 616 railroad mishaps occurred in 2010.
The new creation of GangaRao’s research is expected to be made using $2 million dollar grant given by the United States Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration division. The new composite material is expected to advance the durability of the tank cars than the high-quality carbon steels of current tank cars. The researchers are currently planning on expanding their research in the tourist areas and also to protect the armed vehicles use by the U.S. military. This new discovery will be a game changer in terms of cost, durability, and effectiveness in advancing the service life of both the civil and military infrastructure.
