This new research has resulted in the creation of new imaging contrast agents from some of the common dyes including food dyes and tattoo ink. Furthermore, by attaching nanoparticles to these dyes they attain a property of illuminating cancers and thereby, helping medical professionals to get a better view of both the normal adjacent cells and cancer cells. The study reported in Biomaterials Science majorly focuses on making early detection of cancer possible for achieving better outcomes. In the U.S., almost 38% of the Americans have cancer at some of point of their lives.

The use of good imaging agents and contrast materials is necessary while spotting cancerous cells as they provide better sensitivity and specificity such that the diagnosis is accurate with the exact margins of tumors. Generally, endoscopy is used to identify the structure and further biopsy is required to confirm if there is non-constructive growth. However, the creation of an imaging tool to identify if polyp is benign or malignant will make the entire diagnosis process a lot easier.

The use of color dye-incorporated nanoparticles helps illuminate the cancerous polyp and make sensitive imaging contrast possible. The researchers have used an unusual source of optical contrasting agents such as household coloring dyes and pigments to attach to the cancer-targeting nanoparticles for better localization and identification of cancer cells. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration have already approved the use of coloring agents in imaging practice. Moreover, the dyes used are small molecules and also have interesting optical properties. In addition, the nanoparticle size makes penetration into tumor areas easier with enhanced permeability and retention effect. The potential of this new discovery is expected to provide promising treatment options in cancer research.
