A team of researchers from System Instruments Co., Ltd. and Kobe University has designed a tear-based technology for early cancer diagnosis. The technology named TearExo® is developed for the detection of breast cancer using the exosomes present in tears as biomarkers. And the exosomes are subcategories of extracellular vesicles. The researchers from Kobe University mainly conducted this study with the hope that the new discovery will make a positive contribution toward human health by making early cancer detection possible. This study has already been published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
The chemical nano-processing technology will be the first-ever technology to make use of exosomes for highly sensitive and smooth functioning without any need of detection or pretreatment chemicals. Additionally, the non-invasive breast cancer testing makes collection of samples by the patients possible. The presence of exosomes in the tear fluid has made designing of the new liquid biopsy methodology for the detection of breast cancer possible. The traditional imaging-based screening method, that is mammography, is a time-consuming and tedious task for breast cancer detection. On the other hand, the liquid biopsy is much more easy and precise. The non-invasive cancer testing like liquid biopsies could reduce the burden on the patients.
Exosomes major contribution in malignant development and cancer metastasis is the major reason behind its use as extremely important markers for diagnosing cancer. The new sensitive method could turn out as the most powerful cancer screening method in the coming days. It will be world’s first tear-fluid-based technology for early detection and post-treatment recovery monitoring as well. The new research will indeed help open a new door for breast cancer research.
