ITC Ltd, a tobacco-to-hotel corporation, has opened its first offshore solar power plant in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. The power station, which costs Rs 76 crore to build, will help the firm's business to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The 14.9-megawatt plant, which spans 59 acres, will produce over 22 million units of sustainable energy per year for ITC's resorts, food manufacturing facilities, paper mills, and packaging & printing firms in Tamil Nadu.

To Reduce Carbon Emissions, ITC Commissions A Rupees 76 Crore Solar Plant In Dindigul.

The plant has assisted ITC in meeting 90 percent of its electricity requirements in Tamil Nadu from renewable power. ITC's renewable profile includes 138 MW of wind power generation and 14 MW of photovoltaic power plants, with an added 53 MW solar power volume under construction. Presently, undertakings in other alternative energy sources, such as biomass boilers, are in the works. The company has invested over Rupees 1000 crore in sustainable energy power investments.

The latest venture, according to the firm, is in row with ITC chairman Sanjiv Puri's 'Sustainability 2.0' Vision, which calls for encompassing approaches to assist livelihoods, combat global warming, assist the recycling industry, and facilitate the transformation to a net-zero environment. As an aspect of this aspiration, ITC intends to fulfill 100 percent of total power system electric power necessities from renewable power by 2030, thereby making a significant contribution to combating the environmental crisis.

"At ITC, we have tirelessly followed a goal of ecological custodianship through a number of diverse pursuits that identify the dangers of climate change in a comprehensive way." "Our sizable investments in clean energy assets are an essential part of our low-carbon approach, which aims to make a significant impact to a net-zero economic system," stated Sanjiv Rangrass, Group Head – ITC Life Sciences & Technology.

ITC's 20 factories, 9 hotels, and 6 office towers in Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and West Bengal are powered by renewable energy. In 2018, ITC was the first private enterprise organization to transport renewables all over state lines using the Inter-State Freely Accessible process. Presently, ITC's 46MW wind energy plant in Andhra Pradesh supplies electricity to over 15 ITC facilities across 8 states. This has resulted in the company using more renewable energy.

In addition to investing in innovative renewable energy resources, ITC's Sustainability 2.0 initiative seeks to achieve a 50 percent drop in specific emission levels and a 30 percent decrease in consumption of specific electricity by 2030 compared to a 2014-2015 base point. Large-scale digitalization and research & innovation initiatives, cross-sectoral collaborative partnerships will be used to meet such efforts in decarbonization power consumption via minimal carbon energy alternatives.
