Researchers have recently developed a tomato enriched with nutrients and antioxidants that are likely to help deal with the Parkinson's disease drug. The newly developed tomatoes have L-DOPA which is a primary source in majority of the essential medicines. The genetically modified (GM) tomatoes are basically produced with the goal of making the pharmaceutical drugs accessible for restricted areas in the developing or underdeveloped nations. The people who have adverse side effects such as behavioral complications, nausea, and others on using L-DOPA drugs will feel more relieved when using the natural source tomato as it is not chemically synthesized. Furthermore, as the cultivation and scaling of up the production of tomato is lot more standardized and controlled, it is definitely a wide-ranging source of L-DOPA.

The researchers from the John Innes Centre are the pioneers behind the genetically engineered tomato. In the current study, team introduced the gene responsible synthesis of L-DOPA from tomato into beetroot wherein the gene plays a role in the production of pigments betalains. L-DOPA is primarily produced from tyrosine and it is found to be present in majority of the foods. The researchers inserted a gene having tyrosinase that uses tyrosine to form L-DOPA. The genetic modification is known to help increase the yields. The current focus is to eliminate the drawbacks that possibly hinder the metabolic production of the drug in the plants. It is not far when there will be a production pipeline of L-DOPA obtained from tomatoes.

The ease for the production of genetically modified tomatoes at reasonable cost and more purified and soluble products makes it a suitable option for Parkinson’s disease. Moreover, the high cost of synthetic L-DOPA makes it inaccessible for the people dealing with Parkinson’s in the poor or middle class group. The need for L-DOPA is high in Parkinson’s as it is the amino acid precursor of the neuro-chemical dopamine which is low in such patients. Levodopa is the gold standard therapy for Parkinson’s disease. But, L-DOPA is majorly produced through chemical processes as the natural sources are limited. Thus, the latest invention is possibly a boon for researchers and patients in the field of Parkinson’s disease.
