L-DOPA is primarily produced from tyrosine and it is found to be present in majority of the foods. The researchers inserted a gene having tyrosinase that uses tyrosine to form L-DOPA. The genetic modification is known to help increase the yields. The current focus is to eliminate the drawbacks that possibly hinder the metabolic production of the drug in the plants. It is not far when there will be a production pipeline of L-DOPA obtained from tomatoes.
The ease for the production of genetically modified tomatoes at reasonable cost and more purified and soluble products makes it a suitable option for Parkinson’s disease. Moreover, the high cost of synthetic L-DOPA makes it inaccessible for the people dealing with Parkinson’s in the poor or middle class group. The need for L-DOPA is high in Parkinson’s as it is the amino acid precursor of the neuro-chemical dopamine which is low in such patients.
