Scientists at the Medical Research Council’s(MRC) Laboratory of Molecular Biology(LMB) have found the atomic structures of the atypical tau filaments to have a connection withchronic traumatic encephalopathy(CTE),which is a head injury-relatedto neurodegenerative disease. They also discovered that filamentsvary in structure compared to those observed in Alzheimer’s disease. The study issued in the journal Nature showed thatthe tau filament can lead to advanced diagnosis of the disease, which is mostly not done till death, and the growth of novel treatments to avoid its progression.CTE is linked with continuous blows to the head, mainlyconcerning contact sports, like rugby, boxing, and football.

The signs of CTE could be noticed throughbehavioral changes, memory loss, and confusion. However, theprecise causes of the disease are not completely understood. It is not identified why only some individuals exposed to recurrent head injury seem to have progression in the disease. The disorder was first defined in the 1920s and was called “punch drunk syndrome” and later on dementia pugilistica, as some ex-boxers advanced dementia. Almost, 2Years ago, the same panel of researchers at the LMB disclosed for the first time the atomic assembly of the tau filaments which cause Alzheimer's disease. Like Alzheimer’s disease CTE is linked with the abnormal structures of tau protein in the brain.

Recently, the MRC was in news as its lateststudy suggests an easy blood test that can advance the early identification of lung cancer. The study was published in the journal Disease Models and Mechanisms. The study found that in initial tests with the use of mice, a blood test can measure the circulating stages of DNA in the blood, which cancer cells shack as they develop and increase, and can even forecast the presence of tumors in the lungs in advance they became cancerous.
