Innovative virtual reality technologyholdspromise in reducing anxiety and pain among children due to the fear of surgical procedures. One study found thatvirtual reality induced a hypnotic state, which helped to manage post-operative anxiety and pain in juveniles. The researchindicated that a novel virtual reality program could helpmanage cognitive stressby reorienting the program's display when a child changes lateral positions during medical procedures.
As per the recent publication, Dr. Jeffrey I. Gold has been working for almost two decades to discover an effective approach to reduce pain among children during surgery. A team of researchers at the Saban Research Institute in LA-headquarteredChildren’s Hospital observed that VR could be used to deal with this critical issue. Dr. Gold mentioned that while undergoing surgery or any other medical procedure, children in the VR program not even feltwhat was being done to their bodies.
Dr. Gold considers that the surgical pain even could be reduced without using any medical ointment. In order to validate his point, he mentioned that two separate groups of volunteers were formed, who were undergoing similarmedical procedures during the clinical trials. The first group of patients used VR system experience throughout the procedure while the second group was administered with traditional pain relieverssuch as simple distraction procedures and numbing cream. The research findings unveiled that the group using VR technology experiencedless pain during the procedure compared to the group administered with simple remedies.
The research team concluded that this whole process of curbing the pain and anxiety during medical procedures was successful only if the minds of patients weredistracted from reality and urged to imagine something far good. Gold said that anxiety could amplify, especially among children, due to the repeated medical procedures during chronic illnesses. Not only clinicians but also caretakers and healthcare workers consider this technique highly effective in reducing pain by distracting the conscious mind of the victims.
